Can I still wash my hair with locs?

Of course! Many people are under the impression that locs are dirty. The main thing is that for the first month you want to avoid wetting your hair because that gives your hair time to really lock into the loc.

Usually your loctician will give you an herbal spray or show you how to wash your hair should you desire to wash before the month is out. If you can go the month of not washing you can wash. We suggest rinsing your head with an apple cider vinegar rinse and if you insist on using shampoo, then use the vinegar rinse after shampooing. The main thing with shampoo is rinse well. Otherwise the shampoo will get caught in the loc and on the scalp, and that is what can cause itching and flaking while you might think you have dandruff.

How do I maintain the locs?

If you like the perfect looking locs, the important thing is to keep rolling them to tighten the roots. Some people do it with a little bit of locking wax. Some people use beeswax however, we DO NOT suggest you use this! The rolling helps it from fluffing out, so that the loc will remain uniform and have less chance to unravel.

If you are using a loctician, every few months you will get a "loc maintenance." They will get it all organized for you and help the new hair loc into the loc which will prevent breakage. If you are very good at taking care of your locs, you'll hardly need loc maintenance.

What if I have little hair to loc?

If you don't have a lot of hair or thin hair, but you still want locs, then a loctician can loc your own hair and add loc extensions (in either your natural hair color, or brighter colors) so you'll look like you have a lot of your own locs.

Can I color my locs?

Yes, you can bleach your locs and color them as you would with your regular hair. We suggest you have your loctician or a salon dye your locs. It is difficult to remove the dye from the interior of the loc and you can cause hair breakage or skin irritation from residual dye.

I want to do my own locs. How do I begin?

Before you first begin to loc, wash the hair well and then use a stripping shampoo to remove the oils. During the first twisting session and others thereafter, avoid sticky hair products like beeswax. Although they make the locking process go faster, it attracts dirt and lint like crazy.

Salt water from the ocean or made up in the kitchen with a little vinegar added can help you lock faster without the goo of a wax.
