Interview: Natural Journey |

Page 1 of 2 Interview: A Natural Journey by Ms SNIPS Many times when we want to do things that are considered out of the ordinary or cutting edge, we don't have anyone to turn to for support. That is one of the reasons we built OurHair!
One of our members, who has undergone her own natural hair journey, happily shared her experiences with us in the interview below!
When did you "go natural" and how?
I went natural Feb. 2001. - I was actually supposed to do it with a friend in Dec. but I chickened out and when she came back from a trip; all her hair was cut off and mine was fried again!!!! Two months later, I was so fed up with my hair, I just cut it off and never looked back.
What products did you use at first and how did they work for you?
I started out using KMS straight line first and some creamy oil stuff with it too. I also used Pantene (the curly stuff), Infusium, and Aussie. I just remember my hair was so hard from the KMS relaxer balm and dry, it was so horrible. Soon after, I figured out that those products weren't for me and I started to use more natural products only, like Carols Daughter.
What problems did you have or what successes?
Well, my hair was shiny but it was always hard when I first started out. When I moved to more natural products, my hair would start out feeling soft and shiny but by the end of the day, my hair was dull and had this dry but oily feeling. I started to mix in conditioners with my oils and this helped a bit, but the next morning my hair would always be puffy and dry feeling. Mixing my oils with conditioners started me to thinking about the oil/water interactions and emulsions and I decided that there was much more to this. And I started to research my products more closely and found that those that contained emulsifiers produced better results with my hair.
What is your routine now?
After seeing a picture of [an OurHair member's] hair; it was so shiny and reading her post that she hadn't use oil in her hair for a while; I just had to find out what she was up to. She told me that she had eliminated all oil from her routine and her hair was so much better for it. [See: Snips! Do You Need To Use Oil On Your Hair?
Did the prospect of going oil-free concern you?
I actually wasn't apprehensive at all, except for the fact that I just bought $50 of oil based specialty products. But I threw caution to the wind and armed myself with the products I needed.
What products do you use now?
My products are as follows:
- Supermane Conditioning Spray by Origins
- Roothealth Daily Strengthening Cream by Profectiv
- ABBA Nourishing Conditioner by ABBA
- Shape and Shine Gel by Thermasilk
- Kenra Moisturizing Shampoo and Conditioner
