Page 1 of 3 Synthetic & Human Extension Hair
Through the years, women's beauty has evolved from a past consisting of limited ways of styling hair to what is now an expansive realm of possibilities. After a long struggle, black women have created essential means to express their afro centricity. These days women can express their culture in numerous ways, not just limiting themselves to afros, perms or styles to suit someone else's taste.
Everyday, women encounter new styles that allow them to stand out and be an individual. We embrace a range of styles from Afro centric earth mother to urban sophisticate, to hip-hop diva, to preppy suburbanite, to bald-headed Bohemian! We toss our waist length dreadlocks and our braided blond extensions with equal conviction that it is our right to choose exactly how we represent! Extensions are great for either filling out your hair to get a fuller effect, or to go from short to long. Extensions are also good for if you want some bright highlights in your hair, but don't want to color your own hair. As said before, the extension hair color won't fade so you don't have to keep coloring it.
Human vs. Synthetic
Synthetic extensions are installed in small strands rather than in a weave. Weaves are possible, but only with human hair and we prefer the other way. They are also installed with string rather than using heat-seal or a glue gun. This causes less damage to your own hair and is also much easier to remove. The synthetic hair can't be dyed or bleached, it won't take color and the color of the synthetic hair also won't fade.
You can comb your extensions holding the extensions at the base so it won't slip. Gently brush the ends first, working your way up. You can also wash your hair as long as you are gentle to the hair and make sure you don't get any conditioner on the base where the extension is placed, as that will cause slipping. After a few weeks of wear you can have the synthetic extensions steamed. This will make them fresh again.
Human hair extensions are installed the same way as the synthetic. Human hair is good for a more natural look, but is more expensive than synthetic hair. If your own hair is slightly wavy or curly, it's best to go with human hair. The human hair comes in all colors, lengths, textures, waves and curls imaginable, although if you want a brighter color rather than the natural colors they come in, you'll have to color it.
You can brush the human hair extensions if you want to, but you'll probably find that just leaving them as they are and putting some conditioner and pomade in there will look better. We advise to finger-comb the extension rather than with a brush especially if the extensions have a wave or curl.
Requirements
Your hair should be at least one and a half inches long. Remember, everybody's head shape, hair thickness and texture is different. If you have fine, thin, layered hair and a small head, use much less hair than if you have thick full hair and a bigger head. The extensions can be worn usually from six to eight weeks. Of course it also depends on how good you take care of it and how fast your own hair grows. As your hair grows, you will need to have the extensions tightened. You can feel that they need to be tightened by the length between your scalp and the extension. If there is about one inch of hair between your scalp and the extension, you'll know it's definitely time for a tune up.
