Review: KemiOyl Pomade
ImageReview: KemiOyl Pomade
By OurHair Staff

This week, I want to tell you about one of my all time favorite products for natural hair- KemiOyl Shea Butter Pomade by KemiLabs. Although I still follow the NO Routine, this product has become my hair care staple when my hair needs a little extra care.
When I was a newly natural, I suffered from very dry hair. I accepted this as a part of having unprocessed African textured hair, but I knew that if I did not find a way to ease the dryness, my hair would begin to split and break. I also had a goal of wanting soft, touchable hair since most gels and oils left my hair hard and greasy.

During one of my many product shopping trips, I came across KemiLabs who advertise their products to be "nature's perfect gift for the hair." After reading each product label of their entire line, I chose a jar of the KemiOyl Pomade because it was a mixture of Shea butter, essential oils and a herbal complex. It was touted as adding moisture and conditioners to dry, dull, damaged hair, while providing strength and pliability. Of course, it sounded perfect!

What follows below is my post (edited for clarity) back in August 2001 on the OurHair Voices message board about my experience with the pomade:

I'm happy to report, I can do a mental check off one of my hair goals-soft, touchable hair. I had been using Beyond Belief Shea Butter cream, but it stopped working for me when my hair grew a bit more. Now I have found something that works from KemiLabs who is quickly becoming my company of choice for hair and skin products.

Normally, I do not (cannot) do non-creamy Shea butter, but what I found has yielded some incredible "great hair" days. It's a mixture of Shea butter, essential oils, and a herbal complex called KemiOyl Shea Butter Pomade. I have written the company to find our what the oils and herbal complexes are, but until then I assume there is no mineral oil or petroleum. It is not creamy, looks like cake icing, is the color of peanut butter and the scent is a bit wild because it smells like cotton candy.

I had tried KemiOyl once before and hated it, but I think it's because I used it wrong. I put it on dry hair the last time, but this time I used it on wet hair. The result was next to miraculous in terms of softness and pliability with a non greasy feel. I put it on while my hair was dripping wet and was certain I was in for a problem because my hair immediately turned ashen gray and looked like I had smeared it with Crisco.
In desperation, I combed my hair and brushed it thinking it would melt, but I looked like the Bride of Frankenstein, with my hair standing straight up, grey streaks and all!

I threw a scarf on and finished getting ready for work and an hour later when I took the scarf off, my hair was incredibly shiny, with curl definition that was amazing. The ashen look was totally gone, but the most incredible thing was the softness! It was like shoving my fingers into a slightly damp angora sweater. When I got into work I got compliments all around. One male friend felt it and oohed and ahhed how soft it was. He's felt my hair before and said that while my hair is usually soft, it was MUCH softer than usual.

The softness lasted the entire day which is unheard of because I always have to re-wet my hair. This morning, it's still just as soft and pliable even though my head wrap came off at some point during the night. My jar is 4oz and cost about $5; an inexpensive solution for what I had been spending quite a bit of money on to cure. I just hope this works longer on my hair than most products do. It seems with every inch, my hair wants something different on it. Finally, something that works as advertised!

KemiOyl Shea Butter Pomade is nature's perfect gift for the hair. It moisturizes and conditions dry, dull, damaged hair, while providing strength and pliability for total management. KemiOyl Shea Butter Pomade provides hold, moisture an sheen to braids and locs, and also gives moisture, sheen, and softness to natural hair. It is an excellent conditioner to be effective on all types of hair.
